To study in New Zealand, Nepali students must meet both English language proficiency and academic requirements. New Zealand’s universities and institutions offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, each with specific entry criteria.

Academic Requirements to Study in New Zealand

Undergraduate

+2 / A-levels equivalent to New Zealand’s National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3.

Some courses may require specific subject knowledge and grades.

Postgraduate

A completed bachelor’s degree with a satisfactory academic record.

Some programs may require relevant work experience or research ability.

Compared to countries like Australia, the USA, and the UK, New Zealand offers a cost-effective education system. Some undergraduate programs take three years to complete, while postgraduate programs vary in duration based on the field of study.

Documents Required for Admission

To apply to a New Zealand university, you will need the following documents:

  1. Offer Letter from the university or institution
  2. Academic Transcripts from previous studies
  3. IELTS/PTE/TOEFL Score for English proficiency
  4. Passport (valid for at least six months)
  5. Statement of Purpose (SOP) outlining your academic and career goals
  6. Work Experience Documents (if applicable)
  7. Completed University Application Form

After submitting your application, some universities may require a virtual interview. The processing time for the offer letter can range from 1 to 6 weeks.

Visa Documentation

Once you receive your offer letter, you will need the following documents for your visa application:

  • All Academic Documents (Transcripts, Provisional Certificates, Character Certificates)
  • 2 Passport-Sized Photos with a white background
  • IELTS/PTE/TOEFL Score
  • Financial Documents: Proof of funds covering one year of tuition fees and living costs (minimum NZD 20,000 for living expenses per year, plus travel expenses)
  • Proof of Income: Salary slips, bank statements, business income, or other supporting financial documents
  • Property Valuation Report (if applicable)
  • Tax Clearance Certificate
  • CA Report verifying financial stability
  • Birth Certificate
  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Citizenship Certificate (translated into English)
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the university or institution

Documents Required for Spouses or Dependents

If you are applying with a spouse or dependent, you must provide additional documents:

  • Marriage Certificate (for spouse applications)
  • Evidence of Cohabitation (lease agreements, utility bills, etc.)
  • Proof of Joint Financial Assets (bank accounts, property ownership, etc.)
  • Dependent Visa Financial Support Proof (additional funds of at least NZD 5,000 per dependent per year)

Visa Application Form and Fees

  • Visa Application Form INZ 1012 (for student visa applicants)
  • Visa Fee for Nepali Students: NZ$ 430

Visa Interview (if required)

Some students may be required to attend an interview at the New Zealand Immigration Office or VFS center in Kathmandu. Preparing thoroughly with relevant documentation is essential to increase your chances of approval.
